Demanding that search engines filter their results to combat online piracy is not only a form of online censorship, but also futile in the fight against online piracy. By imposing laws that regulate how search engines return results, we are not only damaging a tool that we can use to keep up the fight, but we are also creating a potential global impact that may restrict results in other countries who are not bound by our laws. Passing these laws (SOPA, PIPA, OPEN) may also limit the credibility of domestic companies, who happen to be search engines, and could potentially push their users to sites in other countries that do not filter results thus rendering the legislation futile.
