In last week elections in Catalonia with the participation of 70% of the electorate the people of Catalonia expressed their desire to hold a referendum to determine their future as a new independent European State, part of the European Union. The Government of Spain has indicated that it will not allow the people from Catalonia to to hold this referendum.
The Catalan people have their own distinct language, culture and traditions that are not being respected by the Spanish government; many Catalans do not feel Spanish, but rather a Catalan citizen without their own State. In 2012 during their national holiday, in a peaceful demonstration 1.5 million people took to the streets of Barcelona to demand independence.
