Whereas the US customary units have no base and are inconsistent, the metric system has a base of 10 and a very consistent use of prefixes to signal multiples of the base unit, e.g, 1 kilogram = 1000 grams, 100 centimeters = 1 meter.
Since America is the only industrialized country that has not adopted the metric system, our students must needlessly learn two units of measurement which can be very confusing and frustrating.
Switching solely to the metric system will eliminate much confusion between units such as the force pound (lbf) vs the mass pound (lbm) vs the true unit of mass, the slug, (1 slug = 32.2 lbm = 1 lbf*s^2/ft) (1 lbf = 32.2 lbm*ft/s^2).
Switching to the metric system will make learning easier for students and may have a positive impact on our science and technology goals.
