Pope Francis said on 11 April 2014 that some priests have sexually abused children and that the Church does not want to take one step backward in dealing with this problem and the sanctions that must be imposed. However, a 2004 US Bishops report put the number of priests with 1950-2002 allegations at 4,392 so the global number is in the tens of thousands, not “some priests”. On 28 March 2014 Italian Bishops published guidelines whereby Bishops have permission not to report allegations to police, a moral step backward. No Bishop has ever been sanctioned by the Vatican for failing in the moral duty to report to police paedophilia allegations. Pope John Paul II was canonized despite doing nothing about this:
