It is becoming increasingly difficult for the Earth to sustain the human population. The population is steadily growing, and the higher the population, the more quickly we deplete our precious natural resources. Eventually, the Earth will simply be unable to house our species. So long-term preparations for the cost of researching how to terraform Mars, and begin colonizing it, must be made. Yes, doing so will be expensive, and we may not even know how it can be done yet. But we have to begin to prepare now, because eventually the Earth will be uninhabitable. Colonizing Mars (or any other planet, though Mars is the most likely), is essential for the survival of our species.
