Start a national screening program for girls between the ages of 13-18 for PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)

Created by B.W. on April 15, 2015

While appoximately five to ten percent of the female population has PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), the U.S. lacks a manditory screening program for this disorder.PCOS is linked to Syndrome X and is often genetic. This syndrome can have lasting effects on the fertility of a woman. In addition, PCOS causes a tendency to obesity through the hypothesized cause of the illness: insulin resistance. As insulin levels rise, women can produce more testosterone, leading perhaps to the most self-esteem crushing aspect of this disease: male pattern hair growth. Also, women with polycystic ovarian syndrome are four to seven times more likely to have a heart attack.
With early treatment, some of the effects of this disease can be prevented, or greatly relieved.
