The U.S has absolutely no legitimate national interest in the Syrian Civil War. The neocons are pressing the Administration to engage in a conflict that will produce greater instability in an area that was severely destabilized by earlier neocon championed interventions such as Iraq and will inflame further, the enmity of the people of the Middle East toward the U. S. and whatever form of retaliation engendered thereby.
