The country is divided between groups concerned about entitlements and those worried that cutting spending too quickly will hurt the fledgling recovery.
To address both of these concerns, please consider offering young Americans a buy-out option to Social Security. Instead of tinkering with benefits or the retirement age, offer a lump sum to young Americans in exchange for forfeiting any later benefits (most young Americans don't expect to collect S.S. anyway). They would still pay payroll taxes but would not be entitled to collect benefits later in life.
This program could immediately improve the economy by removing debt burdens and providing capital to young Americans while reducing the future costs of Social Security (a buy-out of ~$200,000 vs average lifetime benefits of $417,000).
