"We will put a college education within reach of anyone who wants to go." --Barack Obama
Student loans cost graduates--many of them unemployed or underemployed--hundreds of dollars to thousands of dollars a month: money that would otherwise be spent and help stimulate the economy.
The student loan industry helps many go to college and grad school who couldn't otherwise, but it also saddles them with debt. Specifically, unsubsidized loans necessary for so many to go to school mean that they incur high interest rates while still in school--exactly when they are least able to pay down their debt. Student loans should have a major overhaul, and in the meantime, there should be loan forgiveness or relief for those looking for work.
