The US government should not stop other nations from raising their minimum wage, and it should sever relationships with any entity that violates the law.
The Haitian parliament unanimously passed a $5 per day minimum wage for their people in 2009. However, our own government immediately moved to stop this legislation, and arranged a deal that gave the textiles sector a reduction of this improvement, down to $3 a day. Hanes had a $221 million profit last year; $5 per day would have only cost them $1.6 million.
In addition, as of October 2012, 21 out of the 22 Haitian factories exporting to the US were out of compliance in regards to paying their workers minimum wage. Our nation has done nothing in response to these abuses.
This is unworthy of our great nation. Please stop this now.
