The United States has more people imprisoned as a percentage of population than even mainland China. There has been a rapidly-accelerating move by both states and cities to turn over incarceration and their support services to corporations. Crime may be motivated by profit, but Punishment should never be. The endless desire for increasing corporate profits lead to more and more inhuman conditions (but who cares about the obviously guilty) and lobbying their legislative silent partners to pass more and more criminal offenses (as who would be against Law and Order).
To stop this grab of filthy lucre so below what we should strive to be as a civilized society, the Federal Government must move to zero out all law enforcement funds to states and cities that allow for-profit prisons and jail
