26 million Americans (adult and children) are afflicted with asthma (CDC, 2012). According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, 15% to 30% of people with allergies have allergic reactions to cats and dogs. While trying to arrange my first time on an airline I was discouraged when I found out that up to 6 animals could be allowed in the cabin of all the airlines. Due to severe allergies to animal dander I realized I would not be able to fly without placing myself at a significant risk to my health. For many allergy sufferers reactions can include itchy eye, swelling of the face, eyes, throat, wheezing, coughing, and anaphylaxis. Airlines have stopped serving nuts on flights because of passenger's allergies so asthmatics should have the same protection and rights.
