Hidden in 2015 National Defense Authorization Act, is a section granting an illegal land swap near Superior, Arizona, benefiting a foreign company named Rio Tinto PLC, wants to mine copper there.
A Rio Tinto venture with BHP Billiton Ltd is going to be given over 2,000 acres of federal land, in exchange for over 5,000 acres of company land.
Native American groups, especially the San Carlos Apache Tribe, have been trying for years to stop this swap, because the mine would damage natural resources and areas that are culturally sensitive. Concern is greater for a site called Apache Leap in the Tonto National Forest.
