Stop arguing about the definition of marriage

Created by V.S. on March 18, 2013

The government does not need to be involved in who-loves-who, who-considers-who to be married or answering the question: “What is marriage?” The government needs to focus on being an arbiter that ensures the constitutional rights and due process that it has promised to its citizens, regardless of creed, religion or sexual preference.

Therefore, I propose that the government not recognize marriage anymore. The word “marriage” would be replaced with “one legal & financial entity” in all contracts. Any two citizens that wanted to be treated as one legal & financial entity could register as such with the government. This way, the philosophical and biological question of “what is marriage?” is left to individual citizens to decide for themselves.
