Brunei recently enacted several aspects of Sharia law which criminalize acts such as publicly not being Muslim, disparaging Islam, being homosexual, and committing adultery. Under the new laws, all of these "crimes" are punishable by the torturous execution of death by stoning.
The Obama Administration has been actively* seeking to engage countries of the Pacific, including Brunei, Malaysia, and Vietnam (the latter two of which have laws of a slightly less severe nature that also deny basic human rights to innocent people), in a trade partnership called the Trans-Pacific Partnership. This would grant these countries special economic privileges, which I would think goes against our nation's founding principal of "Liberty and Justice For All."
