At present the Border Patrol and Immigration agents can take and search electronic devices, conduct body cavity searches, and detain travelers without a warrant or probable cause. They can do this not only at the Border crossing points but at Checkpoints located up to 100 miles from any US Border, including all coastal borders.
This petition is to revoke the authority all law enforcement officials, particularly the border patrol and immigration agents, currently have to conduct warrant-less and no-probable-cause searches away from a Border crossing checkpoint.
The goal is to end the current existence of a zone 100 mile inside every US border,where constitutional guarantees of freedom do not apply to US citizens.
