When a student 18 and older applies for Federal financial student aid under the Free Application for Student Financial Aid (FAFSA), the application requires their parent(s) income information for determining the expected family contribution (EFC) to the educational expenses. If the parent(s) is not able or willing to contribute to the child's education,the child suffers. Also, in most states child support payments stop at age 18 and there is no extension requirement when the 18+ child is in school. Inaddition, at 18, the child is automatically emancipated, and the parents have no legal rights or obligations to the child, so why is the Federal student aid reduced by the EFC? Many parents are just meeting ends and our future leaders are being penalized.
