stop celebrating Columbus Day, but keep that day as a holiday and instead celebrate someone else who wasn't such a tool.

I don't need to describe the nature of Columbus's actions and character in detail here. Enough has already been studied and written about him. Yes, he led a group of ships that was one of the first to set sail to North America. But what he did to the people living here when he reached this continent was horrible - enslavement, rape, and murder, among other crimes. I think most would agree that celebrating the memory of this man is wrong. There are many people more deserving of being commemorated that are associated with the early days of European settlement of this continent, such as Bartolomé de las Casas for example. Google him. I don't think we should get rid of this holiday completely, I just think we should use the day to recognize someone else's accomplishments.
