Every day, hundreds of thousands of slaves in the Ivory Coast, Mali, and Ghana go to work harvesting Cocoa plantations. Many of these individuals are under the age of 12. They are not paid, their working environment is extremely dangerous, and worst of all, they are not happy.
Chocolate companies such as Hershey's, Nestle, and Mars were found in 2001 using slavery to produce their cocoa in Africa. The United States government created the Harkin Engel Protocol, a document committing chocolate companies to end all forms of slavery in their system. They were given 4 years to complete this task.
That was 13 years ago, and little progress has been made toward eradicating slavery.
We urge the government to take action and to put a stop to this. End slavery in chocolate now!
