A simple web search on "civil forfeiture abuse" and other related phrases will turn up many cases in which a person or persons have had their property and/or money confiscated by authorities based simply on suspicion of having committed a crime. It is often large sums of cash that people were carrying for legitimate reasons that is taken. Their lives can be turned upside down sometimes to the point of financial ruin.
They are required to prove their innocence in a court of law rather than the government being required to prove their guilt as per the Unites States Constitution. Many of these victims never recover their property even though proof of guilt was not established in any way whatsoever.
Too many innocents are caught up in this well meaning process for it to continue.
