stop companies from checking job applicants credit.

Please make a law that prohibits employers from checking would be applicants' credit history. I have a bankruptcy in my past, due to my former employer cutting hours down to 24 a week, then they closed abruptly leaving 5000 unemployed. Why should I be penalized for something I had no power to change??? My credit was fine before. Owned a home, car, plenty of credit. Now, I'm not even able to get a job because companies ask if there is a bankruptcy in my credit??? Some even ask if there are misdemeanors on a record??? Do any of these questions determine if I am a responsible worker??
