The risks of studies increasing the communicability of H5N1 (bird flu) far outweigh the benefits and the research should be stopped. Dr. Fouchier and Dr. Kawaoka used public NIH funds to make the deadly H5N1 virus airborne. The virus itself kills over 50% of those infected with it. They have made it more easily transmitted between hosts. The research was not conducted at the highest biosecurity level (BSL4) and they propose to make the information available to the public, including those that would do us harm.
