Stop defending discrimination against American Samoans and recognize the citizenship rights of U.S. territories.

Created by K.S. on March 18, 2015

As pointed out by John Oliver in a recent episode of his HBO show Last Week Tonight, the Obama Administration is currently defending a 112 year-old stance of the U.S. government to deny American citizenship to residents of American Samoa, despite the fact that they are born on U.S. soil, in a case entitled Tuaua v. United States. The case is currently on appeal before the D.C. Circuit.

The District Court dismissed the plaintiffs' case, relying on the controversial "Insular Cases," decisions from the early 1900s that held that the people of the U.S. territories were from "alien races...different from us" who would be unable to understand "Anglo-Saxon principles."

The administration should cease defending this unconscionable position and right this historical wrong once and for all.
