In 2010, an investigation revealed that many soldiers in the California Guard were given larger enlistment bonuses than they were eligible for. This occurred through no fault of the recruits, but rather through misappropriation of funds by recruiting officials trying to meet recruiting goals. The Pentagon has nonetheless insisted that these soldiers return the funds that they received more than 10 years ago. It is unreasonable to expect this money to still be available for return. Many of these soldiers are combat veterans, and they should not have to mortgage their homes to repay this money. We request that the Pentagon erase these debts from the credit reports of innocent soldiers, and cease all collection activities. The Pentagon lost the money, the Pentagon should pay for it.
