Mercury amalgam restorative material generally contains 50% mercury in a complex mixture of copper, tin, silver, and zinc. Mercury has been demonstrated to have damaging effects on the kidney, central nervous system, and cardiovascular system. Realizing the dangers of mercury amalgam, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden have enacted legislation that has banned mercury amalgam in their countries.Six states in the United States have enacted legislation that requires that informed consent brochures be given to the patient in a dental office before dental restorations are undertaken.We the people have the right to know that Mercury is being placed in our mouths. It should be required by all dentists to provide informed consent of the probable dangers, and allow us to make the decision to take the risk
