We need to magnify by 10,000 times to view an HIV cell on a slide magnified to 600 metres by 200 metres with an electron travelling at 2,200 km/s. Yet all magnification causes blurring and the limits of microscope magnification are determined by the diameter of the objective lenses and position of the slide. The microscope is not otherwise constructed to optimise viewing. The objective lens tube is smaller than the eyepiece/ocular lens, the cylinder has to be dimly lit for the screen not to blur, the mirror is placed at a 45 degree angle so that light passing through the slide is already diffuse, and any projection from the slide is backwards onto an opaque or semi opaque screen. So we are viewing an object/s inside the microscope and, at most, a wash of the stain from the slide.
