The practice of domain parking is where an internet registrar or other company will register a top level domain name, such as coughmedicine.com (at the time of this writing), and place a fake contextually generated web site there in place of a real business. The revenue is generated for the domain owner through pay-per-click ads without offering any real goods or services, and will often be designed to deceive the visitor to think that the site is a real storefront. If someone wishes to purchase the top level domain and use it for a real business, the domain owner will charge an exorbitant fee for the domain, well over the price they paid to initially register it. This can have a very negative and stifling effect on new business owners and market ingenuity.
