The electoral college was made in a time when the average American was not educated and did not have access to all of the information necessary to understand the candidates and what they stood for. It was also made when counting a large number of votes was a problem. These issues are not relevant anymore.
They have made the campaign process pander to swing states only. Your vote doesn't really count if you live in a non-swing state. If you agree with the majority, your vote doesn't matter, if you disagree with the majority, your vote doesn't matter.
