Corporations and organizations spend enormous amounts of money in Washington D.C. for lobbying. Therefore they can essentially buy laws that benefit themselves and potentially create an unfair disadvantage for individual citizens or other corporate competition. For example, the private prison industry, (which is for profit) would benefit if there were more people sent to prison. This is dangerous because it creates an obvious push by the prisons for harsher punishments and increase in laws.
This is one statistic of many that I find alarming:
