Drug patents currently last 20 years, that is plenty of time for people like Martin Shkreli and Heather Bresch to take over a drug and raise the price on sick people. Drug approval takes a long time, however, much of this research is funded with taxes and charities. To be fair to drug companies they should have a chance to make it through the approval process. However, once on market the patent should only last for 5 years to allow for free market competition. Free market competition is far more effective at regulating prices than heavy handed FDA control. If you shorten the patent, you break the monopolies, and you empower the market to deliver fair prices to the people.
