Oregon, Washington, and Idaho departments of Wildlife are authorized to euthanize 92 Sea Lions by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) part of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The justification for the authorization is Sea Lions are eating endangered Salmon, but the Sea Lions do not eat enough Salmon to justify the euthanizing.
Sea Lions eat less than 4% of the Salmon population each year according to the Army Corps of Engineers. Meanwhile, fisherman and tribes take between 10% and 17% of the salmon populations each year, and an additional 17% are taken by the dam. To kill Sea Lions for eating Salmon when Humans and Dams kill four times as much, is not justified.
