The estimated damage costs from the GE Fukushima, Japan nuclear plant meltdown is $125 billion dollars. American nuclear plants need only $375 million in protection. There is a shared fund for a large nuclear disaster of only $11.6 billion dollars. A far cry from $125 billion. After the $11.6 Billion is gone the costs are all on the US governement because of the Price Anderson Act (subsidy).
If the nuclear industry was forced to properly insure itself, and coal to manage their ash, the "cheap" nuclear and coal power myth era would end and alternatives will become competitive.
