The Obama administration has implemented a policy to force-feed hunger-striking detainees in Guantánamo bay during Ramadan. Ramadan, a month of fasting, shall occur this year from July 9, 2013- August 7, 2013. The administration has refused to suspend the force feeding through tubes directly into the stomachs of detainess during Ramadan, and instead have offered to respect the daylight fast by force feeding 45 detainees at night. The government added a proviso, implying that daytime force feeding might be necessary, given "any unforeseen emergency or operational issues".
This is not only an issue of human rights, but an issue of safety.
