The key to capitalism is fully competitive markets. The meat industry receives large amounts of taxpayer money for both direct and indirect subsidies. Fruit and vegetable farmers receives very little subsidies by comparison. This means that the price of meat in a supermarket or restaurant is artificially much less then it should be which overshadows food that by comparison should be much cheaper. It takes dozens of times more water and five times more land to produce animal protein than equal amounts of plant protein. In a true competitive market, fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and less cholesterol-rich foods should be much cheaper then meat. If this was reality, people, I believe, would eat less meat and switch over to healthier food. This transition would benefit America.
