Many of us vote Democrat or Republican only because we are forced to. Forced, because any vote cast 3rd party is a "wasted vote". But a 3rd party vote doesn't have to be, and shouldn't be, a "wasted vote". By introducing INSTANT RUN-OFF VOTING, as in Australia and elsewhere, voters would be allowed to rank all candidates by preference. They may vote like this:
1. X
2. Democrat
3. Republican
Translated: "I think the best candidate is X, but prefer the Democrats to the Republicans". Or, vice versa, if they prefer. This small change means no "wasted votes, no "spoilers", no "lesser of two evils" and no government duopoly.
It improves our democracy in a cheap, simple way. If a bunch of rowdy, drunk Australians can handle it, so can we.
