"1 in 5 women is sexually assaulted during her military career... Less than 10 percent of rape cases result in jail time — more often, the charges are downgraded to a misdemeanor like adultery, with both the victim and the rapist punished." -MARISA PEÑALOZA and QUIL LAWRENCE, NPR
Often times, the charges are completely dismissed.
Rape and Sexual Assault cases must be taken seriously. Individuals found guilty of raping or sexually assaulting another person should be punished to the full extent of the law, without special privileges or cover-ups. Victims of assault should not be shamed/held responsible for the attack(s). Real prevention techniques should involve educating potential attackers on how to NOT RAPE/ASSAULT and enacting severe punishments for those who do.
