Government officials use Twitter to communicate with constituents. Unfortunately, should a constituent voice an opinion that the official disagrees with they run the risk of being blocked from either viewing or responding to Tweets the official posts.
Doing your own "@GovOfficial'sNameHere blocked me" search on Twitter can be very reveling. Part of the problem is that Twitter fails to make users distinguish between a public versus private account and somewhere along the way public officials forgot that their Tweets are public record.
Twitter blocking by government officials is discriminatory and it ultimately undermines our standards of open government and democracy. Tweets should remain open to public scrutiny and criticism.
We need legislation to correct this unlawful behavior!
