Iodine deficiency can lead to goiters and hyperthyroidism. The Institute of Medicine (RDA) recommends 150 ug per day for adults. Today, only people who have goiters or women who are planning on having a baby get tested for iodine. Current tests of women in the United States, found iodine deficiencies as reported by Carlton, K. PhD.
In the US most iodine intake has come from iodized table salt. Today people in the US get up to 85% of their diet from processed food and restaurants which typically do not provide iodine. Milk which was a source of iodine, is no longer a viable source. Today, most table salt sold in stores are no longer iodized.
It is imperative that the US require all table salts in the US to be iodized as well as educate the people about iodine deficiency and be tested.
