The port workers in the Eastern and Gulf Ports are threatening to strike on September 30, 2012 when their contract expires. Port workers, who, for the most part (1/3 of Eastern port workers are paid more than $208,000, not including bonuses or other incentives), are paid very good wages, and are striking to slow down automation and responsibility of container chassis. If these ports close, then it will cause the US economy to fall farther into ruins. This will cause the cost of normal goods to increase and create a shortage of supplies. The government needs to step in and make sure the ports do not close.
