It is wrong when the Social Security Administration uses direct deposit to put money in an individual's account without explanation. It is worse when the individual pays the money back as soon as the Social Security administration permits the repayment and that time happens to have crossed into a new tax year. It is horrible when the Internal Revenue Service tries to collect tax on the money after the individual was disciplined enough to put the money in a separate account, follow up with the Social Security Administration to be sure the money could be repaid, and repaid the money as soon as Social Security was prepared to accept the repayment. Please stop the IRS from collecting taxes on money paid in error that is later repaid in full. Restore faith in our government.
