The coffee brewer manufacturer Keurig intends to implement digital rights management (DRM) technology in their upcoming 2.0 brewing system. This, however, is clearly an anti-competitive measure that aims to monopolize the consumer coffee brewer industry and put various smaller coffee cup producers out of business. Thus, the implementation of DRM in brewers is anti-competitive (due to their ability to deny usage of coffee products not made by Keurig's parent, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc.) and anti-consumer (due to the possibility of unfair pricing by Keurig). TreeHouse Foods, Inc.; Bay Valley Foods, LLC; and Sturm Foods, Inc. have already filed a lawsuit, but federal intervention in this matter is essential in order to protect the consumers and the industry.
