We urge the White House to reject the Keystone XL pipeline project. Few of us will be able to digest the 11-volume State Department environmental review; but beyond "carbon pollution," we are concerned about the many "accidents" surrounding existing pipelines; the cultural impact of bringing large, temporary settlements of pipeline workers into rural communities; and continuing public investment in 19th and 20th Century energy technologies, all formulated when environmental impact was not adequately recognized. All these concerns are well-documented by democratic citizens' organizations. We urge the White House to use our rejection of this proposal to challenge the nation to pursue a long-term path toward truly sustainable technologies in the 21st Century.
