There are too many Americans who can and are considered "the working poor" in this country. Repaying student loans is important, but not as important as putting groceries on the table, keeping the lights on, and keeping a roof over the heads of these people who already scrape every penny that they have together to go on from week to week. If you take a family of 4 who is trying to live off $550/week and take 25% of their income away to pay off a student loan, how are they supposed to stay off welfare? It is these practices that are going to increase the number of foreclosures in this country, the number of people needing the welfare system.
