President Obama should know better than to perpetuate the practice of media spying on an American. Yet he has permitted US intelligence to continue intercepting a citizen for topical material used to distort news and entertainment. A practice begun during WW1, it not only usurps the constitutional rights of an individual but it deceives the public that media acts according to the First Amendment rather than operating for US intelligence agencies. A free press cannot serve the public or provide ethical journalism when it operates as an intelligence unit of a government. And a government which controls media by intelligence methods cannot run a free country.
