Currently Transgender Individuals are either male or female at birth and may or may not have had a gender marker change on their permanent records. Currently insurance companies may and do deny certain services to transgender individuals solely based on the gender markers or gender codes used by the insurance companies. One example of this is that Medicare uses the gender marker from social security's records and will not cover breast exams or inject-able estrogen hormones used to transition from male to female. These hormones are medically necessary to maintain healthy hormone levels that might otherwise cause long term issues, especially for those male to female transgender individuals that have had irreversible surgeries.
