Stop minting pennies.

Created by A.Z. on August 17, 2013

Pennies are economically inefficient. Like the half-cent coins before them, I think that stopping production of new pennies would be a good idea. Pennies cost more than two cents each to mint, and few people use them. Other countries (such as New Zealand and Canada) have stopped minting their equivalent of one-cent coins and stores round transactions to the nearest five cents. Note, however, that this rounding will not apply to electronic payments like credit cards, and if you want to buy things with pennies you already have, you may continue wasting time with them, as they will continue being legal tender. The main counter-argument is that "Prices will rise and charitable contributions will lower." but this is not the case in other countries, such as Canada.
