The penny and the nickel cost more than they're worth. A penny costs 1.8 cents to make, and a nickel costs 9 cents to make. Removing both of these would save billions a year, which we could use for much better things. The best part is that prices wouldn't increase, and charitable donations wouldn't decrease. For buying things, we can keep prices the same, but if you don't have any pennies you can round to the nearest five and just pay that. Other countries, like Canada and New Zealand removed their one-cent coins and neither of them suffered any economic consequence.
