I stand by John Green on this one.
The penny and the nickel are quickly becoming leeches on the U.S. economy. It makes no fiscal sense to keep minting a coin that is worth 1 cent, while it takes nearly triple that cost to make. It does not make any fiscal sense to mint a 5 cent coin that costs nearly 12 cents to make!
Several other countries have gotten rid of their equivilant of the penny and not seen any notable change in their economies because of this. Donations have not dropped. This may only be a small drop in the bucket when it comes to addressing our debt, but every drop counts.
Make our pockets lighter and stop the minting of the penny and the nickel. Canada can probably give us some pointers.
