Stop paying any government position past their term. How much money would that save the Country?

I feel that the country would be in alot better shape if politicians acted like public servants and not so greedy. In my opinion there should be a salary cap on the government payroll. I know in my heart of hearts that the salaries of the elected offices drive most of the politicians. Lower the salaries of all the top officials and don't pay them after their terms are over and save the country billions. My family of 5 made it on a salary of $45,000 with a mortgage,car payment,and the other essential bills that You the president don't have to worry about while in office. Why does the President need to earn $400,000 a year for life, when middle class america can make it on +/- $55,000. Not sure about other positions like VP,senators, congress, but I'm sure they all could get by with pay cuts
