STOP PENALIZING INDIVIDUALS WHO CHOOSE TO MARRY STUDENT LOAN BORROWERS

Created by H.G. on March 11, 2014

STUDENT LOAN BORROWERS WHO CHOOSE TO BE MARRIED SHOULD NOT BE PENALIZED FOR DOING SO.

Currently, married student loan borrowers (who file taxes jointly) must include their spouse's income when calculating their student loan payments (under Pay As You Earn).

Why must a spouse who had no part in taking out their significant other's student loan have 10% of their income essentially garnished to pay for their spouse's loan? THIS MUST END.

While married student loan borrowers should never have to include their spouse's income in calculating their payments, there is the option to file taxes separately. However, Obama's 2015 Budget seeks to do away with this - making the non-borrower spouse subject to their significant other's student loan. THIS IS PENALIZING THOSE WHO MARRY LOAN BORROWERS.
